Paver Restoration in Colts Neck, NJ
Surrounds, Patios, and Walks | The Coping Joint Is the Different One | Free Estimates
Most of a paver job is the same whether the surface is a patio, a walk, or the deck around a pool. The surround is the exception, and the exception is one joint wide.
One photo down the length of the surface, and one close-up of a joint.

The joints get stripped, the surface gets cleaned, and sand goes back in. Sealing is a separate decision with its own line on the quote. The season for all of it closes at Thanksgiving and opens again in March.

Why a Pool Surround Is Its Own Problem
The Joint Against the Coping Is Not a Paver Joint at All
On a typical pool the coping is fixed to the pool structure while the paver field around it moves. The gap between those two things is an expansion joint, and it has to stay able to move. It also takes everything that splashes out, so it is usually the first joint to open and the last to dry. That is one joint on the property where what goes back in is not joint sand, which is why it is looked at and called out at the estimate rather than re-sanded with the rest of the field. It is the reason a surround is not simply a patio with water next to it.
Away from the coping the surround behaves like any other paved field, with two wrinkles. The first is traffic. Bare feet do not abrade a joint the way a tire does, but a surround still has lines people walk: gate to steps, steps to table, table to door. Those are where the furniture gets dragged and the wet feet go, and those joints go down next. The second is the lawn edge, where nothing walks at all and the joints are still full under a season of growth that established itself before anyone looked. A surround can be open at the coping and overgrown at the perimeter in the same summer, which is why it gets read in zones rather than as one surface.

On a patio or a walk
Same job without the coping joint and without the splash. What decides those is usually drainage and what is growing beside them: the low end of a patio and the shaded side of a walk are where the joints go first, and a walk that runs under planting comes back sooner than one out in the open.
How Much of It to Do
On a Big Surround the Field Is the Job
Colts Neck is a large-lot township, with much of it zoned for properties of about two acres and up. That tells you nothing about any one surround, and plenty of homes here sit on smaller older lots. What we can say from the work is that the surrounds we get called to are often big enough that doing the whole field is a job on its own. On a small surround you clean and re-sand all of it and stop thinking about it. On a large one there is a choice to make.
Nobody standing at the back door can tell which of those a surface needs, and that is not a failure of attention. It is what the walk-through is for.

The Work Itself
Stripping, Re-Sanding, and Then the Sealing Decision
Everything living comes out of the joints, and so does the spent sand underneath it. Polymeric sand replaces it in the field, and it has to go into a joint that is dry and then be watered to activate, in that order. The coping joint is the exception. That one takes a backer rod and a flexible sealant, for the reason set out at the top of this page, and the two get priced as the different jobs they are.
Sealing is not part of the re-sand and does not have to be decided with it. If you do want it, the finish is water-based and stops well short of gloss, so a sealed surface reads deeper without looking wet. Around a pool the part to plan is the drying, because the surround is off-limits while it happens, and how long that takes depends on the sealer and the weather. You get the window when it is quoted.
Questions From Colts Neck
Asked at the Estimate

The pavers right at the coping are loose.
That can be the joint or it can be what is under the paver, and they are two different jobs. Re-sanding tightens a field where the joint is the problem. Where a unit is moving underfoot rather than rattling, something under it has shifted: the bedding, the base, or the edge restraint. That is a different job from re-sanding, and what is possible depends on what Angelo finds when he looks at it.
Can this be done while the pool is open?
The cleaning and re-sanding, usually yes. On most surrounds there is room to work in sections and keep the pool usable. Where there is not, that comes up at the estimate and not on the morning of the job. The sand is watered in to set it, so the work stays back from the water while that happens. Sealing is the one that wants the whole surface clear, which is why it sits better at the end of a season.
White haze on the pavers near the water.
White on pavers has more than one cause, and beside a pool it has three. Efflorescence comes out of the paver itself and fades as weather works it off, though how fast depends on the paver and on how much rain and sun that spot gets. Salt residue sits on top and mostly rinses away with fresh water. The one that stays is calcium scale, which comes out of the pool water rather than out of the paver and builds wherever splash-out evaporates in the same place over and over. They are handled differently, and nothing gets sealed until whichever one you have is off the surface. We check that before anything else.
