A clearing gets the trough and the leaders back to working order. There is one thing it cannot tell you, and one thing only you can see, and they are the same thing.

The number of stories, and the spot where it spills if you have seen it.

Gutter Cleaning in Marlboro, NJ, by Catanzaro's Power Washing

It is visible only while it is actually raining: the spot where the water goes over the edge. Where it happens reads three different ways, and the position separates a cleaning question from something a cleaning will never touch.

Where It Goes Over

The Spot Tells You More Than the Volume Does

Water coming over the front edge of a gutter looks the same from underneath wherever it happens. It is not the same thing, and the position separates them.

At or near the downspout, in heavy rain. A trough carries more water the closer it gets to the outlet, because everything upstream is still arriving and the pitch sends all of it to the same place. So a system running at its limit runs out of room at that end first, which means a spill there in a downpour is not by itself proof of a fault. It has two readings. A blocked outlet or leader, which is the most common cause by a long way and the one a clearing reaches. Or a system already at its ceiling, which a clearing will not change, because clearing restores the capacity a gutter was built with and adds none. Which of the two it is shows up the moment the leader is opened.

At the far end of a run, away from the downspout. This one is nearly always a defect and not a question of volume. Water only piles up there if something is stopping it from getting away: a length that has sagged, a run that has been pushed out of pitch, a partial blockage partway along, or a roof valley emptying a wide area onto one short run. These are things a clearing finds, and some of them a minor repair reaches, which is why a far-end spill is worth reporting precisely.

Behind the gutter, or down the fascia. This is not an overflow at all, because the water never got into the trough. On a steep roof a fast sheet can carry straight over the lip, and where the metal edging that should guide water in is missing or has come away, the water follows the underside of the shingle and runs behind instead. From the ground it looks identical to a gutter spilling over. No amount of clearing changes it.

Worth knowing before you book

We do not size, fit, or replace gutters, and drip edge and gutter apron at the roofline are a roofer's work, not ours. Refastening a loose section and restoring its slope is a minor repair we do quote. Where the answer turns out to be the system or the edging rather than what is in the trough, we describe what we saw and refer you to a gutter contractor.

What Your Answer Changes

What We Look At Once We Are Up There

A clearing happens whichever it turns out to be, and how we reach it depends on the house. What your answer changes is where the attention goes while we are up there.

Near a downspout, the outlet and the leader get the time: the drop, the elbow, the fitting at grade. Further out, the run itself is the thing, sighted along for a dip or a length pushed out of true, with the valleys above it worth checking on the way past. And where the water never got into the trough at all, the answer is at the roof edge, so we will tell you what we can see and what somebody else would need to reach.

The leaders get water put through them in every case, which is how anybody finds out what they do with it. Brightening the outside face of the trough, and any minor repair that turns up while we are there, get quoted alongside the clearing.

Asked After a Storm

What People Ask Before They Book

It only overflows in the very worst storms. Is that normal?

It can be. Every gutter has a limit, and a downpour that beats it once or twice a year is a different situation from one that spills in ordinary rain. If it goes over in an average shower, something is wrong. Clearing or a minor repair reaches most of what that turns out to be. If it is going in behind the gutter at the roof edge, that one belongs to somebody else. And if it only goes over in the sort of rain that closes roads, you are probably looking at the system's ceiling.

It has always done it in the same spot. Does that change anything?

It changes a lot. A fixed spot is a physical feature staying put: a low point, a seam, a joint, or a valley landing there. Overflow that moves around the house with the weather points somewhere else. Same spot every time is the most useful sentence you can give us.

Do I need to be home?

No. None of it happens indoors, and a gate that opens is all we really need. If you are home and it happens to rain while we are there, that is the one time everybody gets to see the thing we have been talking about.

Tell Us Where You Saw It

If you have watched it go over, tell us the spot: near a downspout, out at the far end of a run, or behind the gutter altogether. That one detail changes what we go up there to look at, and it is the one thing we cannot work out for ourselves on a dry day. On the older Marlboro streets, tell us what is standing over the gutters too, because the timing follows the trees more than the calendar.
