Troughs Cleared by Hand | Leaders Flushed and Reported | Free Estimates

The trough gets cleared by hand and the debris comes away with us instead of getting pushed along the run. Then the downspouts get flushed, which is how we find out what they do with water.

Tell us the number of stories and whether the leaders go underground.

That last step is the one that matters most here, because Monroe kept its old places and built streets around them across sixty years, so the two kinds of leader sit a few streets apart: the ones that end at the bottom of the wall, and the ones that carry on into the ground. Which one you have is the first thing we ask.

One Township, Two Kinds of Street

One Township Name, and Two Very Different Second Halves to the Job

Gravel Hill. Half Acre. Mounts Mills. Matchaponix. Wyckoffs Mills. Monroe kept the names of the places that were here first and built around them for sixty years, which is why two houses a mile apart can have completely different drainage.

On the older streets the downspout ends in an elbow over a splash block, where you can see what comes out of it. On the streets built since 2000 it often disappears at the wall, piped away to a drywell, a gravel bed, or a pop-up fitting out in the lawn. Same roof, same trough, same leaves, and two entirely different things to check when it overflows.

When the Gutter Is Clean and It Still Spills

The Gutters Are Clean and the Water Still Backs Up. Here Is Where to Look.

This is the call we get most often in the week after somebody has had their gutters done, and the answer is usually somewhere people have not thought to look.

The elbow at the bottom. By far the most common one. Water loses speed where a downspout turns hard at the bottom, so whatever washed down it settles out right there. It is also the easiest to clear.
The adapter at grade. Where a downspout meets the buried pipe there is a fitting, and the change of shape and direction at it is where debris arriving from above hangs up.
The buried line itself. On an asphalt roof, shed grit is the steady contributor. It is heavy, it keeps arriving, and it settles wherever the line runs flat. Roots, a crushed section, and winter ice do the rest.
The outlet. A pop-up fitting out in the lawn gets grown over by turf, buried under mulch, silted up from below, or clipped by a mower. When the far end is shut the line stands full and backs up from that end, which looks exactly like a blockage at the house.

Which one it is gets narrowed down at the house. We open the elbow of a leader that backs up and clear it then and there. If it still backs up with the elbow clean, the blockage sits somewhere beyond hand reach: higher in the run at a crimp or an offset, at the adapter where it goes into the ground, or past that. The flush narrows it to a stretch, and we tell you which stretch and what we ruled out. Where we can watch a pop-up while the water is running we do, and we tell you whether anything came out of it. The flush is part of the job for that reason.

Worth knowing before you book

We clear the trough and flush the leaders. We do not jet or snake buried drainage lines. Where the trouble is in the buried run or at its outlet, we photograph what we found and refer you on.

What a Flush Proves

A Leader That Takes the Hose, and What That Does and Does Not Settle

A leader that takes the hose and keeps taking it is clear for the volume we can put through it. That is a good sign and short of a guarantee, because a hose is not a downpour. One that fills and holds is telling you something now, and you hear which of yours did what.

Two Other Things We Look At on the Roofline

Gutter brightening, which takes the weathered streaks off the outside face of the trough, is quoted alongside the clearing when you want it. And a hanger that has pulled, a seam that has opened, or a length of trough sitting out of pitch often comes down to a minor repair. If it is one, you are told what it takes before anybody touches it. A run that is past repair is referred to a gutter contractor.
