Siding and Trim | What the Wall Is Decides the Range | Free Estimates

Most color conversations start with a chip. The one that has to happen first is about the wall it is going on, because the material decides how much of the range is actually open to you.

What the walls are made of, and which sides get the afternoon sun.

On some walls the material itself rules nothing out. On others, going dark is a question with a technical answer, and it is much better settled before anybody falls in love with a shade.

The Question Before the Color Question

Dark Colors on Vinyl Siding Have a Physical Limit

A dark color absorbs more of the sun's heat than a pale one. On wood or fiber cement that is mostly a maintenance question. On vinyl it is a physical one, because vinyl softens as it warms and a panel that gets hotter than it was made to get can warp, buckle, or pull at its fasteners, and no amount of good painting prevents it. Paint manufacturers publish a light-reflectance figure on exterior colors for exactly this reason, and there are paints formulated to carry darker colors on vinyl than an ordinary exterior paint can.

That does not make a dark house impossible. It makes it a question with a real answer, and the answer depends on what your walls are, which color you are actually asking for, and how much sun those elevations take. A homeowner has no particular reason to know any of this, which is why we raise it before a color is chosen and ordered instead of afterward.

What Is Not Being Painted

The Roof, the Brick, and the Window Frames Are Not Changing

Whatever is not being painted still has to be lived with. The roof, the brickwork or stone at the front, and the window frames were all chosen to go with something, and none of them is changing because the siding is. Those fixed materials rule more colors out than taste ever does, and they are easier to work with than to work around. A color that looks right on one house can look wrong two doors down, on the same wall material, under a different roof.

Sheen

The Same Color on the Body and the Trim Will Not Look Like the Same Color

Sheen is the part of a color decision that almost nobody asks about and a lot of people notice afterward. A higher-sheen surface throws light off in one direction instead of scattering it, so from most angles less of it comes back to you and the color reads deeper and richer. From the one angle where it is catching the sky it reads washed out. A flat surface scatters light back at you from everywhere, which softens the color and makes it read a shade lighter.

That matters on a house because trim is normally specified at a higher sheen than the body, for durability and for cleaning. Pick one color for both and you will get two versions of it, particularly along a sunny elevation and particularly across the course of a day. It is a good effect when it is chosen and an odd one when it is a surprise. It is also why, if you are doing the trim now and the siding later, the pair is worth choosing together while both are still in front of you.

Worth knowing before you book

Paint only goes on when the temperature and the weather allow it. That is the manufacturer's limit, not ours.
Exterior painting stops from mid-November to March. Interior painting is what we do through the winter.

Before the Color Is Ordered

How Dark You Can Actually Go

Sometimes straightforwardly, sometimes with a paint formulated for it, and occasionally not quite as dark as you had in mind. If the color you are after sits below what the manufacturer rates for your siding, we will show you the figures and how close we can get inside them. The alternative, which is taking the order, putting it on, and letting you find out in July, is the one nobody wants.

Not the color yet. What the siding on your Marlboro house is made of, and which elevations get the afternoon sun. Those two answers are what narrow the range, and the color conversation is a much better one once they are out of the way.
