Why It Is Rarely One Pair
A Colonial Front Is Six or Eight Shutters, Not Two
East Brunswick is overwhelmingly single-family housing, and the colonial is one of the shapes it takes most often. A colonial front carries a pair of shutters at every window, so counting from the sidewalk usually gets you to six or eight shutters before you reach the sides of the house.
On one wall in one exposure they have usually faded at much the same rate, which is exactly why a single new pair reads as new against the six left beside it. The old ones look old. That is the decision actually in front of you, and it is an easier one to make with the number in hand.
Where fading is uneven
South and west fronts go first: the most sun over the year and the most heat with it. A north-facing front can still look close to original after the same span. Where a porch or a garage wing shades one half of a front, the exposed half runs ahead of the sheltered one, and a partial set is worth discussing.

What Gives Out, and Where It Starts
Trim fails at the bottom and at the joints, because that is where water sits and where it gets in. The garage door surround, the bottom of a door casing, a window sill, and the ends of a fascia board are the usual places, and a soft spot the size of a coin generally means the piece has been wet for a long time.
Where a piece can be repaired it is repaired. Where it cannot, it is replaced, and paint over soft wood is money spent to hide something rather than to fix it.

Can you match the shutters we already have?
Sometimes, and it depends on what they are. Where a match is not realistic, we will say so rather than put something close-but-not-quite on your front wall and let you discover it in daylight.
Can we do the front now and the sides later?
Yes. The front is what the street sees, and plenty of people do it in that order. It gets recorded so the second half matches the first when you come back to it.
One shutter blew off in a storm. Is that an insurance job?
That is between you and your insurer, and we are happy to give you the estimate in writing either way.
Does the trim have to be done at the same time?
No, and it is quoted on its own line precisely so you can choose. The one case worth doing together is trim immediately around a window whose shutters are coming off anyway, because the access is already there.
