Prep Depth Is the Number, Not Square Footage
Two houses the same size can be very different jobs, and the thing that separates them is how much work has to happen before any paint goes on. That is what Angelo is reading when he walks the house.
How the old paint is failing
Paint that has gone chalky, so a hand comes away dusty, needs a thorough wash and then a primer that binds whatever chalk is left, but not much scraping. Paint lifting in sheets is a different matter: something got behind it, so the sheet comes off and the reason gets dealt with, or the new coat lifts in the same place. Fine cracking in a pattern usually means many coats over many years, and that is the most labor there is on an older house.
Where the wood has gone
Bottoms of casings, the ends of a fascia run, the underside of a sill. These are found by hand, not by eye, and they are found before the quote, never after the work has started. Repair or replace is settled then.
How far the color is moving
Going much lighter, covering a strong color, or moving into a deep red or yellow is what separates two coats that cover from two that ghost. A primer tinted toward the new color is usually what settles it, which is why primer sometimes appears on a quote for a house whose paint is otherwise sound.
None of that reads from a photograph, which is why the estimate happens at the house.

What Matawan Homeowners Ask
Can you start in the morning?
We can be there in the morning. Whether paint goes on in the morning depends on the wall, and near the water it often does not on the shaded side. The prep work fills that part of the day, which is why the running order matters.
Can you paint in October?
Yes. Exterior work runs through mid-November and then stops until the spring, so October is a normal month for it. The limit on any given day is what the paint's own instructions allow for temperature and weather.
Our house is old. Will the wash hurt it?
It is soft washed at low pressure, which is exactly the method an older wall needs. What the wash sometimes does is show you where the paint was already letting go, and it is better to find that before the new coat than after.
Can you just do the trim?
Yes, and it is a common way to do it. Trim takes the worst of the weather and often fails years before the siding, so fresh trim can keep a house from looking like it needs a full repaint for another season or two.
Do you do the inside as well?
Yes, and the winter is when it happens, which is the other half of our year. Interior covers everything except kitchen cabinets.
