Wood Cleaned and Stained | Composite Cleaned | Free Estimates

Two questions settle a deck quote, and most people can answer neither from memory. What is it made of, and what has been put on it before?

A photo of the whole deck, and one close enough to see a cut end or the underside.

Wood takes a finish and eventually loses it. Composite never takes one and still needs cleaning. And a wood deck that has been recoated six times is a different job from one that has never been finished at all.

First, Which Is It?

Look at the Underside and Along the Run

People are less certain than you would expect, particularly about a deck that came with the house. Composite boards are ribbed or scalloped on the underside and usually carry a manufacturer's stamp along them. Wood does not, and its fastener holes have darkened around the heads.

Then sight along the run. Composite repeats the same grain pattern every few boards, because those boards came off the same production run and were embossed with the same pattern. Wood never repeats. If you would rather not get underneath it, send the close-up and we will tell you.

Composite

It Resists Rot. It Still Grows Things.

Composite was sold on being maintenance-free, and a lot of people heard that as nothing ever has to happen to it. What it means is that it will never need a finish and that it resists rot far better than wood does. It is not immune. Most composite is wood flour held in a polymer, and once the surface has weathered through, that wood flour holds water like anything else with wood in it.

So it gets cleaned: a solution that lifts what is growing in the embossed grain and in the channel between boards, at low pressure, then a rinse. Planter rings, leaf tannin, grill grease and rust from a furniture foot all mark composite, and you will know which of them is coming out before it is quoted. Fading is the one that never moves. Where a surface has chalked unevenly with age, cleaning takes the dirt off and leaves the fading exactly where it was.

Wood

The Finish Is the Part You Are Buying

Cleaning takes off the dirt and most of the gray. The brightener neutralizes what the cleaner left and brings the color back toward where the wood started. Sanding takes down the grain the wash raises and cuts through whatever gray is still in the fibers. The stain holds all of it until the next time, which on Angelo's reckoning is five or six years, sooner on the boards that take the afternoon sun.

What decides whether it is worth doing is not the color. It is whether the boards are still sound. Where one has to come out, board repair or replacement is agreed with you and listed on the quote before work starts.

The Harder Question

On a Fifty-Year-Old Deck, What Matters Is What Has Already Been On It

Covered Bridge was built between 1972 and 1982, which puts its original decks a decade or more ahead of composite reaching the market. Any original deck out there is wood, and by now it has taken one of two histories. Both are common in this township and they are not the same job.

01

Recoated many times

Layers of solid stain, each one applied over the last, the oldest of them failing underneath. The work here is stripping, and it is the most labor there is on a deck. A clean-and-recoat over that is money spent to buy two years, because the new film fails where the old film lets go.

02

Never finished at all

Bare wood that has weathered silver for decades. It looks worse and it is usually the easier job: clean, brighten, sand, and it takes stain thirstily because there is nothing in the way. The surprise is how much color comes back.

You cannot tell these apart from the kitchen window, which is the real reason a deck gets looked at rather than quoted from a photograph.

Two photos get us most of the way: the whole deck, and one close enough to show the underside of a board. If you know what has been put on it over the years, say so, because that is the part a photo cannot show.
